At Ear Care UK, we use two clinically recognised methods to safely remove ear wax. Methods are in line with nationally recognised NICE Guidance, quality statement QS185
Microsuction
Microsuction is widely considered the gold standard for ear wax removal.
This technique involves:
Using a medical suction device
Viewing the ear canal through magnification and illumination
Typically takes 10–20 minutes (exclusive of consultation time)
Suitable for most patients
No water is used
Precise and controlled removal

Who should have Microsuction?
Microsuction is commonly recommended for people with:
Perforated eardrums (only in certain circumstances and following a consultation)
Previous ear surgery
Recurrent ear infections
Hearing aids
Ear Irrigation
Ear irrigation (sometimes called ear syringing) involves gently flushing the ear canal with a controlled stream of warm water to remove softened wax.
This method may be used when:
Wax has been softened with ear drops
The ear canal and eardrum are healthy
Microsuction is not required
Both methods are safe and effective when performed by a trained practitioner.
